FSAI closure orders in 2026: month by month, January to September

Adding up the FSAI's nine monthly releases, it reported 70 Closure Orders and 10 Prohibition Orders for January to September 2026, 80 orders in all. June had the most Closure Orders (13) and February and August the fewest (3 each). The September release, published on 15 October 2026, reported 12 Closure Orders. For all of 2025 the FSAI reported 102 Closure Orders and 23 Prohibition Orders. The totals for 2026 are my sums, not an FSAI figure.

How many closure orders has the FSAI reported in 2026?

70 Closure Orders and 10 Prohibition Orders, January to September 2026. That is my sum of the nine monthly releases the FSAI has published so far, the latest on 15 October 2026 for September. The monthly releases give no Improvement Order counts, so I have none to add. Where a release mentions no Prohibition Order, I record none mentioned rather than a firm zero.

The month-by-month figures are in a CSV you can download. If you cite it, the line is: Cupán Studio, from FSAI monthly enforcement releases, January to September 2026, read 16 October 2026.

Which months had the most closure orders?

June had the most, with 13 Closure Orders, according to the FSAI's release of 14 July 2026. March and September followed with 12 each, then July with 11. February and August had the fewest, with 3 each. August did have the most Prohibition Orders of any month, four, and none are mentioned for September. I would not read a pattern into nine monthly numbers. They move a lot from one month to the next.

How does 2026 compare with 2025 and 2024?

It cannot be compared properly yet, because 2026 is nine months and the other two are full years. The FSAI said on 13 January 2026 that 127 Enforcement Orders were served in 2025: 102 Closure Orders, 23 Prohibition Orders and 2 Improvement Orders. On 9 January 2025 it said 133 were served in 2024: 115 Closure Orders, 16 Prohibition Orders and 2 Improvement Orders. Its 2025 release describes 2024 as "the 132 that were served in 2024", so the FSAI's own figure for 2024 differs by one between the two releases.

The annual counts also include orders from other bodies those releases name. For 2025 that is Environmental Health Officers in the HSE, sea-fisheries protection officers in the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority, and FSAI officers. My 2026 sum is of the monthly releases only, so it is not strictly like for like. I have not projected a 2026 full year. Among the recurring issues the FSAI listed in its 2024 release was inadequate staff training, which is the subject of our article on food safety training for café staff.

Who serves closure orders, and under which laws?

Most of the 2026 monthly releases say Environmental Health Officers in the HSE served them. The June and August releases say HSE Environmental Health Officers "and officers in the Food Safety Authority (FSAI)" did. Every one of the nine releases says the orders were served for breaches of food safety legislation under the FSAI Act, 1998 and the European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020.

The releases give each month's orders by law. As an example, the September release says ten Closure Orders were served under the FSAI Act, 1998 and two under the 2020 Regulations. What a Closure Order is, and what a café can do to avoid one, is in our article on closure orders, and I do not repeat it here.

Where does the FSAI publish closure orders?

In a press release on fsai.ie each month. In 2026 the releases came out between the 10th and the 15th of the following month. Each 2026 release says details of the food businesses served are published on the FSAI's website. It also says Closure Orders and Improvement Orders stay listed in the enforcement reports for three months from the date a premises is judged to have corrected its food safety issue, and Prohibition Orders for one month. The latest, for September, is Twelve Closure Orders served on food businesses in September. I name no business from these releases.
