Food and beverage service turnover in Ireland: CSO figures 2018 to 2022
The CSO's table ANA13 gives turnover of €9,693.3 million in 2022 for "Food and beverage service activities (56)", the latest year in the table. That is 20.5% above 2019 and 43.9% above 2021, both by our arithmetic. The table counts 16,245 enterprises in 2022, which makes an average turnover per enterprise of €596.7 thousand, also ours. The table has no separate figure for cafés. Money is in euro as published, and the table gives no price adjustment.
How much do food and beverage service businesses in Ireland turn over?
The CSO's figure for 2022 is €9,693.3 million (9,693,277 thousand in its table). 2022 is the latest year in the table.
One label matters. The CSO calls this group "Food and beverage service activities (56)", and I use that label exactly. I do not say what it includes beyond those words, and the table has no separate figure for cafés.
How did turnover in 2020 and 2022 compare with 2019?
Turnover in 2020 was €4,713.4 million, 41.4% below 2019 (€8,045.3 million). Turnover in 2022 was 20.5% above 2019. Both percentages are ours, worked out from the CSO's figures.
The CSO's table gives no reason for any movement, so this page gives none. The comparisons are only those shown. Against 2021 (€6,734.6 million), the 2022 figure is 43.9% higher, also ours.
How many food and beverage service enterprises and persons engaged are there?
The table counts 16,245 enterprises in 2022. It gives 156,286 for "Persons Engaged" and, as a separate figure, 148,392 for "All Employees". I use the two labels as the CSO gives them and do not say that one is part of the other.
Against 2019, enterprises are up 4.3% (15,576 then) and Persons Engaged are up 3.4% (151,175 then). Both are ours. For more on counts, see how many food and beverage service enterprises there are in a different CSO table, and our page on hospitality jobs and earnings.
What is the average turnover per food and beverage service enterprise?
It was €596.7 thousand in 2022, against €516.5 thousand in 2019. Both are ours: the CSO's turnover divided by its number of enterprises.
This is an average. One business can be far above or far below it, and it is not what any one shop takes.
How is turnover split across the sub-sectors?
The latest year with sub-sector rows is 2021, because the 2022 rows are blank in the table. In 2021, "Restaurants and mobile food service activities (561)" had 8,734 enterprises and €3,985.9 million turnover. "Event catering and other food service activities (562)" had 1,003 and €721.0 million. "Beverage serving activities (563)" had 5,873 and €2,027.6 million.
I use the CSO's three labels exactly and do not say what any of them includes. The CSV also has the table's cost and value-added columns, as published.
Where do these numbers come from?
They come from CSO table ANA13, Distribution and Services Enterprises, part of the CSO's Enterprise Statistics on Distribution and Services, updated 30 April 2025. I took the rows for Food and beverage service activities (56) and its three sub-sectors for 2018 to 2022, and I read the table on 20 October 2026.
The enterprise count here (16,245 in 2022) is from a different CSO table than our 18 October article, which used table BRA31 and counted 16,783 in 2024. I have not tried to reconcile the two.
You can download the figures as a CSV. If you cite it: Cupán Studio, from CSO table ANA13, read 20 October 2026.
