How does a café show up in Google's AI Overviews?

Google's documentation says there is no special step. A page is eligible to be a supporting link in AI Overviews if it is indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and Google says there are no additional technical requirements. The ordinary SEO basics still apply: let Google crawl the site, link your pages together, keep important content as text, and keep your Business Profile up to date. Google also says indexing and serving are not guaranteed, and that AI Overviews often don't appear at all.

Diagram. Left: no extra step is needed, a page just has to be indexed and able to show a snippet. Right: Google's list of basics applied to a café as a checklist: crawling allowed, pages linked, menu and hours as text, photos that support the text, structured data that matches the page, Business Profile up to date.

How do I get my business to show up in Google's AI Overviews?

You do the same things that get any page into Google Search, because Google's page "AI features and your website" says so directly: "The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode). There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." To be shown as a supporting link, the page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". Google adds that meeting every requirement "doesn't mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content".

What are AI Overviews and AI Mode?

They are two AI features inside Google Search. Google says AI Overviews "help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly, and provide a jumping off point to explore links to learn more", and that AI Mode "is particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed". Google also says both "may use a 'query fan-out' technique", which it describes as issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response. Practically, that means a page that answers the follow-up questions around a topic, not only the headline one, has more chances to be one of the pages looked at. That reading is mine, not Google's wording. Google also says AI Overviews "are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger". So many searches will not show one at all.

Do I need special code, an AI file or schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." If someone is selling you an AI file or an AI schema for Google's Overviews, Google's own page says it is not required.

What can a café do this week?

Google lists fundamentals that "continue to be worthwhile". Here is each one applied to a café.

  • Crawling allowed. Google says to ensure crawling is allowed in robots.txt, "and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure". Ask whoever built the site to confirm that nothing is blocking Google.
  • Findable through internal links. Google says to make content easily findable through internal links on your website. Menu, hours and contact should each be linked from the home page.
  • Important content as text. Google says to make sure important content is available in textual form. Our application: a menu that exists only as a photo or a PDF is the café version of this. Put the menu and opening hours on the page as plain text.
  • Images that support the text. Google says to support textual content with high-quality images and videos, when applicable. A photo of the counter next to the words, not instead of them.
  • Structured data that matches. Google says to make sure structured data matches the visible text on the page. If the markup says you open at 8 and the page says 9, fix one.
  • Business Profile up to date. Google says to check that Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up to date. Our guide to getting your café on Google Maps covers the profile.

Google also lists "providing a great page experience for users". If you want to see where your own site stands, the free check at cupanstudio.com/check reads it. For a related test, our guide Is my café ready for AI? says that on 26 September 2026 we read 11 Dublin café websites the way ChatGPT's crawler does, and that none had all four things an assistant needs. That test was of ChatGPT's crawler, not Google, and of Dublin sites only.

Can I stop Google using my site in AI Overviews?

Yes, with the same controls that limit what Search shows. Google says: "To limit the information shown from your pages in Search, use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex controls." Google's page treats AI Overviews and AI Mode as part of Search. Google separately says that to limit AI training and grounding in some of its other systems you should read about Google-Extended. Google's page ties it to those other systems, not to the Search controls above. Be careful. Our reading: nosnippet or noindex on a page can also take it out of the running as a supporting link, because Google says eligibility needs a page that is indexed and can show a snippet.

How do I know if my café appears in AI Overviews?

Look in Google Search Console. Google says that "sites appearing in AI features (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode) are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console. In particular, they're reported on in the Performance report, within the 'Web' search type." Google's page describes no separate AI filter, and gives no way there to split those appearances out from ordinary web search results.
